In all her excitment at the glimmer of gold she could not stop herself from sliding down leaving behind a trail of fried eggs !

Its not his own display it belongs to a grumpy old man named Mr Wilson !
He grows beautiful ferns and he got his Ist ever gold medal at Gardeners world live
At age 73 Mr Grumpy has nothing to be grumpy about any more -
He is now offically a Golden Grumpy Old Git !

On reflection we reckon the Heucheraholics display at Chelsea lost points on one small tiny point.....

We think thatJudge dread -(The one with the vey beady eyes )spotted the fatal error in our display that brought it down from a big fat gold to a Very shiney Silver Gilt...

Trailing Tiarellas,

There aren't many good hardy, evergreen, trailing, foliage plants. Ivy comes to mind as the best known otherwise nothing

much of note until now....enter the trailing Tiarellas. These trailers have just appeared on the scene, quietly with very little razzmatazz, slightly odd given just how useful they are for both ground cover and for use in container planting.

Tiarella 'Happy Trails'

Jooles and Sean have recognised that trailing Tiarellas have great potential as hanging basket plants, they have a good sellection planted up as a trial and who knows perhaps they'll get used in the Chelsea 2011 stand.

'Happy Trails' (sounds as though it was named by the Nissan car company back in the 80's) is performing very well in the Heucheraholics trial.

My favourite is 'Appalachian Trails' (I like that name, a nice double meaning of the Trails word there) the foliage is neat and beautifully marked here's a shot of the lovely young plants growing and showing the mass effect. Hmm, come to think of it these trailers mostly have 'Trails' names with the first part being some USA mountain range.....clever. There's a 'Cascade Trails' and an 'Oregon Trail'. 'Cascade Creeper' and 'Jeepers Creepers' break the trail theme though.....what fun it must be naming new plants.

You don't have to grow these trailers in hanging baskets. In a shade border they can be left to romp around and do a good job of ground covering. Another way to enjoy them is in tall pots, the Yorkshire flower pots long toms would be ideal, just let them trail over the sides and cascade down to the ground.

Don't you just love spell checkers...Tiarellas shows as being better spelled: Interstellar, tessellation, or best of all Cinderella and that seems quite appropriate given that Heucheras have tended to steal the limelight from Tiarellas until now.

Gold at the RHS Halls

Heucheraholics took a Silver award at the RHS Halls show this week, a seriously good result given that it's very early for Heucheras - the plants looked great, and were showing off their cold weather colours whch are just as exciting as the summer growth, just more subtle.

The Gold was in the form of the new salver that Sean is shown modelling.... a classy way to hand change to customers..... and a cunning method of avoiding passing over grubby, wet change from a mucky nurseryman's mitts (perhaps that should read: nurseryman's mucky mitts).

Heuchera 'Snowstorm' was looking especially dramatic in it's intense mottly Winter 'plumage' . The Purple Heucheras were eyecatching too, so much so that a couple of varieties have sold out ...but they'll be back soon.

Tiarella Time

Tiarellas and Heucheras are good chums, they have a lot in common. They both have woodland origins and like some shade, of course they both have fantastic foliage but when it comes to flowers most people would agree that Tiarellas are way out in front in terms of earliness, prettiness and quantity of flowers.

Tiarellas on the Nursery are looking plumptious, full of promise so it's a great time to get some in. Plant them now and you'll get full benefit of this seasons flowers.

Time for a Spring clean, clear up some messy bits and tidy up the rest. Our web site is getting a bit of a face-lift, it will still be quirky and eccentric but the plan is that you'll find your way around easier and there are some new plant groups.

Look out for Pulmonarias, they associate so well with Heucheras and as well as their striking foliage they have very pretty flowers early in the Spring. More info to follow soon.....but a tip, Opal is a winner.

...I mean ...How difficult can it be??

Jooles couldn't understand why the very nice lady looked surprised when she was told to plant her Heucheras on the moon....???

A horrible misunderstanding......

But the ducks were ecstatic to win a prize !! They had no idea what it was for but they loved it just the same!!!

It turned out to be a very worthy prize for our lovely Heuchera collection!! We were very chuffed ..especially when presented with a large bottle of the finest French Champagne!!

Our Ist experience in showing in France was fun and we will be back!!

The Heucheras are looking especially plumptious, Autumn suits them very well. The goldy, yellowy, limey ones are dazzling, come and see them in all their glory!

So what does a one litre plant look like?

Heucheraholics supply almost all of their plants in one litre pots. That means you get stonking plants that are strong enough to get established quickly, they are so much bigger than the plugs and bare root plants that many other nurseries sell.

Remember to water plants in well when you plant them, this first watering is more about settling them in than keeping them moist......even if you plant them in the rain you will still need to give them a good soak.

The plant on the right is typical, some times they'll be bigger and occasionally in the Spring they'll be a tad smaller. Of course size will vary a bit according to variety, some like 'Brownies' get big quickly, others are more petite.

I visited the Heucheraholics nursery today with the camera and I was totally amazed at the quality of the plants.

The new growing facility has really made a difference. Despite the variable weather the plants look perfect. The range of colours is impressive ...it looks like a great time to buy some plants as they are all big and fat after a good growing season.

Heucheraholics Catalogue

We launched our gorgeous glossy catalogue at Chelsea and thousands were picked up in the five days but we know that there are a few of you who didn't make it to Chelsea so now you can get you hands on a digital version from our web site.

The file is a pdf, most computers can view pdf files, in fact most browsers will let you view it as though it was a web page. Be a little patient, it will take a couple of minutes to download as there are 20 pages, much of which is full colour photos - it's worth the wait!

The Heucheraholics catalogue has Jooles own descriptions for all of the plants within it. Unlike most web sites and catalogues Jooles has created descriptions that avoid USA terminology - and she has done them in her own inimitable style. We can't promise that all the varieties in the catalogue are available all the time, so look at the main web site for details of availability.

We struck gold at the New Forest Show

Hot on the heels of Tatton park came the New Forest show, it was panic stations to get the stand together as well as a right mission to find enough show plants, but we made it. Our efforts well rewarded with a shiny gold award!

Something to do with an old herb pot

You can plant all kinds of things in Strawberry and Herb pots......Heucheras seem really happy in them, I guess it's the good drainage. You can position the pot so that the shade lovers are on the shady side and the........well you get the picture.

In my example I've used a rainbow of colours but the simple use of two colours might look better, or perhaps add some other plant into the mix, maybe a Hosta or two.

I used a coarse compost that had loads of stringy stuff in it, this helped hold the compost from sneaking out at the sides of the plant.....take a bit of care watering until the Heucs are rooted, you don't want to flush the soil out of the planting holes.

Watering is easier if you plonk the whole thing in a shallow saucer, the terracotta will wick the water up and ensure that the bottom plants grow as well as the ones at the top.

You could add some crocus bulbs, they would flower at the time when Heucheras are not looking their best and so keep the pot looking pretty.

Graham Rice did a top ten new plants at Hampton Court 2010 and one of our plants was chosen. We'll forgive him for getting the name wrong (it's Fan Dancer) and also for using the USA 'HOOKERA' pronunciation.....the important thing is that Graham picked one of ours out of the thousands there.

Fan Dancer is a great variety, that's why we gave it such prominence on our show stand......can you buy it from us?.......I'll have to check with Jooles, watch this space! and also you need to know that Solva Plants is the other name for Heucheraholics.

Favourite Stand in the Great Pavilion – Sweet Tea Cafe

I confess to never having heard of Heucheras, but I just fell in love with them, and absolutely adored this stand. I’m reliably informed by Jooles, a self confessed heucheraholic, that the inspiration for the Sweet tea cafe theme came from the names of the varieties – and with names like creme brulee, vanilla spice, strawberry swirl, key lime pie cappuccino, chocolate ruffles, tiramisu, it’s easy to understand why! Of course how could Tea with Mary Kate resist the wonderful green shed and amazing purple tea cups!

These pretty plants are great for shade, and with such diversity of form. Rather worryingly, I am beginning to understand the obsession – Geisha’s fan and blackberry jam just two more gorgeous names for equally gorgeous plants.

On press day I visited Jooles and Sean on their 'Sweet Tea' themed stand, once again they pulled off a great display, it was fun, bright and the plant quality was top notch. I had to beat a hasty retreat from the scene due to a reaction to the overpowering stench of the Hyacinths next door but returned later upwind and managed to avoid any further symptoms.

Why didn't the stand get Gold - easy answer Jooles made a cheeky comment about the tie worn by one of the judges and I'm sure that let the treasured Gold slip away..........there can't have been any other reason, or could there?........was the absence of the Duck talisman responsible. Either way, the stand was a hit with the public and that's what matters.

The theme was developed around the new variety of Heucherella 'Sweet tea' - the roof of the little shed was covered in Sweet Tea and the bright planters were oversized tea cups. Sean even did a flower arrangement!.......to follow.

Many people commented on the interesting flowers of the new Heucheras and Heucherellas, they are really quite fascinating and worthy of close inspection, I can see flower arrangers following Seans lead and growing Heucs just for their flowers, he's such a trend setter.

Just look at that fantastic Pinot Gris below, how yummy is that!.........and note the flowers all around. One of the varieties used a lot in the stand was Heucherella 'Fan Dancer' it's a fat healthy plant that makes a great foil for the more colourful varieties - but it's a cracking plant in it's own right and has lovely white flowers. It was great to see some old favourites putting on a good show, there was a fine example H. Plum Pudding and a few other not-so-new ones showing that it's not all about the latest intros.

The Heucheraholics stand has been judged and the result will be declared tomorrow (Tues am) - The plants quality is great as always and the originality is well up to standard so fingers crossed it's a prize card of the right hue.

Colourful Heucheras in the Terra Nova garden

It shows off the amazing colour of new growth in the Spring and speaks volumes for the amazing effects that can be created with the newest Heuchera varieties. Chelsea is tiring and very demanding so Jooles has been preparing the Picnic hamper, it's essential that the team (Jooles and Sean) don't go thirsty so these tasteful cups are being packed along with saucers and Rich Tea's bikkies to match................

Or could outsize crockery be part of the most imaginative stand theme the Heucies have dreamed up so far......the clue is in the name of some of the newest Heucheras.

I've seen Sean deep in thought planning the 2010 stand, all that brain strain means it's going to be something very special - do not miss it!

As the weather warms up the 2010 varieties are coming on stream - look out for about ten of them during the run-up to Chelsea.

Electra
Wow!!! This is another electrifying plant!! Massive brightest golden leaves that have blood running through their veins! The blood keeps pumping through the veins all year even as the leaf colour changes from bright yellow to chartreuse then finally to tan in the winter. Suberb in containers or border mixed with black, purple or shocking pink! Short white spires of flowers borne in summer.

It's well worth trying, they are little gems, this one is the flower of H. 'Viking Ship'. A strange name for such a delicate thing but hey-ho, there must be a reason. I keep trying to see if the leaf markings resemble the prow of a Viking ship but perhaps my imagination isn't good enough to see it.

The marrying of Heuchera and Tiarella has been very fruitful, there are more and more real gems available.

Heucheras - perfect container plants

We often think about container plants as being either for Summer planters or Autumn/Winter but Heucheras are perfect plants for either..........and when they get too big either pop them into an even bigger pot or get them into the garden.

Here's my 'Blackberry Jam' - having thrived in Autumn and not flinched during the Winter it had totally outgrown it's planter. After being extracted it has been settled into a new home in our woodland garden.

Where do all the people come from - it was a solid mass of humanity when I visited the Downton Cuckoo fair on Saturday. It was hard to really enjoy the experience but I was pleased to reach the sanity of the Heucheraholics stand and see the excellent display that Sean had put together.

I managed to have a quick chat with Sean in between him serving customers and bought four nice plants including the new, Berry Smoothie.

Seeing some of the new varieties in flower I was struck by how the leaf colour runs up into the flower head in some of them - very attractive.

I first saw 'Sweet Tea' early last year and thought is was something special, I'm pleased to see Heucheraholics have some of their chunky stock available this early in 2010. Get'em while they're hot!

I wonder why some of my most favourite Heucheras are Heucherellas?........answer please Jooles. Look at Tapestry as an example, that's a great plant and it's a Heucherella....or should that be an Heucherella?

Heucheraholics have expanded their growing area with a massive extra glasshouse.

This is a real luxury and as a result the 2010 plants look super-yummy. You can see Sean at the far end trying to look busy. Just look at the colour in those Heuchs!

This is a terrific plant! An amazing foliage colour of squashed raspberries that deepen to rose purple.

If you want a shocking contrast plant in container next to Lime Ricky or any other bright acid green plant!(Try Euphorbia!!) That is truely not sutble!!!! Flowers cream on strong stems in summer 50cm A big bold plant for all round colour!!!

Ht 45cmx 50cm best in well drained soil - partial shade

Over on the Sea of unfathomable gravy there's an item about the Feb show. It's now called the RHS London plant and design show and has not had great press but hey-ho the Heucheraholics were there and if you scroll down the SOIG post you will have the joy of seeing Jooles and Sean wearing their natty T shirts (Sean, I find T shirts best worn not tucked in) You can click the pic below to see the T shirts - you need to scroll loads though:

The face behind many of the best Heucheras is Dan Heims, a plant breeder from Oregon. Dan is what we might describe in the UK as 'a bit of a character' and if you are into Facebook you can get the man himself as a friend and keep in touch with what makes him tick.

Monty ready for the 1st day!!!

Day 1 ...Montys Story
Well there i was sleeping like a duckling when the boys alarm went off and he was scrambling around trying to find all his gear for that first day.It was still pitch black outside our snuggerly tent!! here we were just outside Zagora(Sahara desert Morocco!)getting ready for 5 days of Heuchera hunting(disguising it as a 100mile walk for "Help 4 Heroes" by the Pilgrim Bandits).So whilst young Sean Got his morning coffee + breakfast (of course saving me a few crumbs) i got my kit ready!!

Day1....Seans Story
The butterflies in my stomach were really having a field day this morning,it was finally time to get this walk underway.Having packed Monty into the rucksack i wandered over to get loaded up with water and a packed lunch(was it duck?? phew its ok chicken+ bread).There was 24 of us (and Monty) all very apprehensive of what was in store!!.Today we would be going over a pass of 1100m and would get fairly warm 40 degrees C. So off we went!! The first 6-7miles were pretty easy,the heat had not really got up yet and was only in the 20"s,we had a couple of stops before the trek up the pass started,as we started up the pass the wind dropped off and the heat came into the equation!! The line of walkers was already strung out over a couple of miles between the first and last groups. So up the pass we huffed and puffed getting to the top at about midday,everyone came together at the top for lunch. Day1....Montys story Off we go i"m sitting on the boys back in a very uncomfortable bag nestled in between water bottles and sandwiches,looking back the way we had come!! i think riding a camel must be close to what i was experiencing, bouncing around from one side to the other. well i was looking the right way..............down,not much luck on the Heuchera hunting front in fact not many plants of any description. Day1....Seans story After lunch it was time to put the boots back on and start out again,the terrain was now more difficult boulders ranging from 18inch to 3inch no real path ,picking away through these stones was quite stressful on the neck as we had to look for the easiest route.We came back together for water breaks every hour and a half.
